Dubai plans to start a new electric air taxi service by 2026. It’s part of Dubai’s effort to reduce traffic and help the environment.

The city wants to be a leader in using advanced technology for transportation. This new way of transportation will be faster and better for the planet.

It shows Dubai’s commitment to making transportation more modern and eco-friendly.

Dubai’s leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, along with Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and Mattar Al-Tayer, who heads the Roads and Transport Authority, oversaw the signing of an agreement on Sunday.

This agreement leads the way for the launch of an aerial taxi service in Dubai by 2026. It will make Dubai the world’s first city with a commercial electric aerial taxi service and vertiport network.

Faster trips with air taxi service

The aircraft can accommodate a pilot and four passengers. It can reach speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour.

For example, a trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah is estimated to take just 10 minutes, a major reduction from the 45 minutes it takes by car.

The specific cost of the project hasn’t been disclosed yet. However, the agreement between Joby and the RTA includes various types of support, including financial assistance, to facilitate the implementation and growth of the service in Dubai.

The Partnership for a Better Future

Led by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and working with top aviation companies like Joby Aviation from California, this effort aims to change how people move around the city.

The agreement between the two parties was signed at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. It grants Joby exclusive rights to operate these taxis in Dubai for six years after 2026.

Additionally, both the RTA and Joby have announced that their initial operations will begin in 2025, with full-scale operations expected to begin in 2026.

They have also said that this service aims to provide safe, fast, and convenient transportation for all. Powered by cutting-edge electric propulsion technology, these air taxis promise silent, emissions-free flights.

Joby Evtol aircraft

As per the deal with Dubai’s RTA, Joby will make, certify, and run eVTOL air taxis in the city.

Skyports will handle the design, building, ownership, and operation of the vertiports for Joby’s eVTOLs across the Emirate, while the RTA will supervise and regulate the air taxi service.

Joby’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft can accommodate four passengers and a pilot, reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour (320 kilometers per hour) with a range of 150 miles (240 kilometers).

It is one of the leading developers of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and has achieved certification in the United States under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Part 21-17B regulations.

Industrial Growth

  • The initial Joby eVTOL aircraft are being constructed in Marina, California. The production capacity is being expanded from four aircraft per year to 50 aircraft per year.
  • The company is also constructing a larger factory in Dayton, Ohio, with the capacity to manufacture up to 500 aircraft annually.
  • In June 2023, Joby obtained a permit from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin flight testing in the United States.
  • In late 2023, Joby, alongside German company Volocopter, conducted the first air-taxi test flights in New York City.
  • Additionally, in December 2023, Volocopter carried out manned flight tests in Osaka, as part of preparations for the city’s hosting of the World Expo in 2025
The Vertiport Network

Skyports will build four vertiports:

  1. Dubai International Airport
  2. Palm Jumeirah
  3. Dubai Marina
  4. Dubai Downtown.

Skyports Infrastructure has established itself as a leading provider of vertiports, offering infrastructure for eVTOL aircraft operations.

It is set to provide vertiports for eVTOL aircraft operations during the upcoming Olympics in Paris. Additionally, the company recently acquired a heliport in London, which it intends to convert into an eVTOL aircraft vertiport. Skyports has been collaborating closely with Joby since 2022.

What is ahead?

Dubai’s groundbreaking electric air taxi service isn’t just about making travel more convenient, it’s about leading the charge towards a greener, more sustainable future.

By embracing clean energy solutions, Dubai is taking a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment for future generations.

These electric air taxis, capable of carrying up to four passengers at speeds of up to 320 mph, promise to revolutionize urban transportation.

As Dubai solidifies its position as a global innovation hub, this visionary initiative is going to attract investment and talent from around the world, driving further progress and prosperity.

Reaches speed of up to 200mph.
